5 Basic Tools Under $10 You Need If You Are Learning to Cook | From Our KTCHN

As we've gained a little bit more confidence in the kitchen, we've realized that this confidence came alongside using the correct techniques and more importantly the correct tools. Do not be fooled by the millions of kitchen gadgets on the market. We believe that as someone who is learning to cook only needs a few key things to be successful in the kitchen.

These are #1 on our list for a reason. We basically use tongs for almost EVERY meal we cook. This set includes comes with two pairs of tongs. This is awesome because in our case, one of us has weak wrists and finds the shorter ones easier to use. However, if you're cooking something like bacon, it's best to use the longer pair to avoid getting burnt by the popping grease.

2. Measuring Utensils

*Update International 8-Piece Deluxe Stainless Steel Measuring Cup and Measuring Spoon Set

This 8 piece set of cups and spoons is really all you need. We currently have the same set, except it's plastic. The plastic set works, but some have cracked and the plastic ring doesn't do a good job at keeping them all together. This stainless steel set is on our list because they're affordable, they look bougie, and will last forever.

3. Hand mixer

Of course, free-standing mixers look great as decor in the kitchen, but are they really necessary? We think you can get by with just a simple hand mixer. A hand mixer is important because for some simple recipes (like chocolate chip cookies), it's going to be way more difficult to get the perfect consistency by hand-stirring. You can save yourself so much time and some wrist pain by getting a basic hand mixer.

4. A mixing bowl

You can't really mix anything well without something to mix it in. We used to use a large plastic piece of Tupperware as a mixing bowl, which did work. However, once we were given a mixing bowl as a gift, we didn't realize how much nicer the mixing process could be. This mixing bowl also has a non skid base, which is awesome if you're clumsy like us!

5. Strainer

We love pasta and macaroni & cheese. These are arguably two of the easiest things to make and they will never our cooking rotation. However, you can't make these two easy foods without a way to strain the noodles. Using a large colander over a strainer that you pour through is beneficial because you can use it to separate a large amount of noodles and water or even just a small amount. Colanders are also great for rinsing fruits and vegetables.
